ABOUT US
The history of Sacred Heart Parish is a part the history of the city of Denver and the state of Colorado itself. We are the third parish of the territory founded in 1879 by the first bishop of Denver (and all of Colorado at that point) Bishop Joseph Machebeuf. The church building itself is the old operating church of any denomination in the city and one of the oldest in the entire state as well. Servant of God Julia Greeley, an emancipated slave and convert to the Catholic Faith, was a parishioner of Sacred Heart and may one day be a canonized saint of the Church. She herself prayed in these walls, spread the Faith through these streets, and loved and served her neighbors. Though she died in 1918, her holy example is looked up to as a model on how to truly love and serve the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This neighborhood is one of the oldest in Denver and the neighborhoods of Five Points and RiNo are in need of her holy intercession and example as much as ever in this rapidly changing area.
